What you do not know may kill you.
Atherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease. It is a common degenerative disease of the arteries, in which fatty material is deposited in the wall of the arteries, narrowing the arteries and eventually restricting the blood flow. Atherosclerosis is a term used to indicate any forms of ‘arteriosclerosis’-a disease characterized by thickening and hardening of artery wall in the human body. It is very hard to detect and determine or discover.
It is believed that over nutrition, lifestyle, genetic or some other factors are the main course. Nevertheless, it is a life threatening disease that is killing men and women in record number.
STATISTICS
Atherosclerosis is responsible for the highest number of death in USA, it is quiet shocking to know that approximately one million people per year die from Atherosclerosis. It is the leading killer of both men and women after the age of 46 and thereafter. Statistic also shows that high cholesterol is responsible for 70 percent of heart disease in this country of ours, USA.
RISK FACTOR
There are number of factors that may induce Atherosclerosis.
Some of these are thought to be what may be responsible for the cause and it is still very hard to narrow the cause to one particular event. However, the following are believed to be the major cause:
Diet
Aging
Weight
Gender/sex
Genetics
Hereditary
Diseases
Lifestyle
Blood pressure
Occupation
Level of stress
COMMON SYMPTOMS
Atherosclerosis does not show any symptoms and may not be medically diagnose until it is too late or serious complication has occurs. However, before complications occur, Atherosclerosis may be noted by the presence of bruit (a whooshing or blowing sound ) heard over the artery with a stethoscope. The affected area may have a decreased pulse.
DIAGNOSIS AND TEST.
Standard medical tests that indicate Atherosclerosis and or its complications include:
the blood pressure of the ankle and arm.
COMMON COMPLICATION OF ATHEROSCLEROSIS.
The common consequences of Atherosclerosis include:
Coronary artery disease (Atherosclerosis of arteries to the heart); due to obstruction (schemia), the blood supply to heart is insufficient, resulting in angina, or chest pain.
TREATMENTS! TREATMENTS!! TREATMENTS!!!
The standard medical treatments and technique for Atherosclerosis include the following:
1. Prescription medications-mainly to reduce
2. Balloon angloplasty- is to flatten plaque and increase the blood flow past the harden or damage deposits by opening the arteries of the heart and other arteries in the body to allow the free flow of the blood to the vital organ of the body.
